A federal task force will hold its initial meeting next Tuesday to begin tackling the problems of Hurricane Sandy victims not being properly reimbursed for their damage from the storm.

U.S. Sens. Robert Menendez and Cory Booker (D-N.J.) are to be joined by New York’s two U.S. senators, Kirsten Gillibrand and Charles Schumer; Craig Fugate, administrator of the Federal Emergency Management Agency; Sandy victims and others.

One of those scheduled to join the task force is George Kasimos, a founder of Stop FEMA Now. Kasmos is a Hurricane Sandy victim who helped form the group to fight rising flood insurance premiums.

Creation of the task force was announced in December when FEMA said it would consider appeals by Sandy victims who had initially missed the deadline for challenging their damage assessments.

FEMA officials in March agreed to reopen as many as 141,800 claims by Sandy victims whose engineering reports or inspections may have been altered to minimize the damage caused by the hurricane, or who received less than expected from their insurers. The government also is working to resolve 2,200 lawsuits by homeowners who have charged that they were shortchanged.

Members of the state’s congressional delegation have met with FEMA officials and have requested congressional hearings into the fraud allegations and the agency’s response to them.
