“George Kasimos of Toms River, N.J., whose bad experience after Superstorm Sandy led him to form the group Stop FEMA Now, said victims of Harvey need to mentally prepare themselves for a long process.
“You’re not going to get paid fairly on your claim for a very, very long time,” Kasimos said. “This isn’t going to take weeks or months, this is going to take years.”
Once flooded residents get back into their homes, Kasimos said they need to photograph everything before they throw it out, and even save samples of flooring such as carpeting or padding or hardwood tiles to show what was damaged.
“This is going to be a paperwork nightmare,” he said. “They’re going to lose your paperwork, and you’re going to resend it. It’s almost like you’re guilty until you’re proven innocent.”
