Catastrophic flooding in March left Mitch Rueth’s Bellevue home gutted.

Four months later, the man has slowly rebuilt.

.

A $15,000 grant from FEMA helped Rueth rebuild his home.

.

The man says he gave FEMA all of his documentation when he applied for funds, including his flood insurance.

.

When he was approved for funds, he said he double checked to ensure that he qualified.

.

“I said ‘Well are you sure?’ I want to make sure before we spend this,” said Rueth. “[The FEMA agent] said, ‘Yes, FEMA does not make mistakes.’”

Three weeks later Rueth received a letter and phone call from FEMA informing him he wasn’t supposed to receive the $15,000, and he’ll have to pay it back.

Why would this man need a FEMA Grant if he was covered by Flood Insurance? Did he get underpaid and he did not know it?

.

“How many other people are getting these letters?” asked Rueth. “Getting the aid and then all of a sudden they have to go back and pay it? That’s what I want to bring attention to.”

Rueth says he still hasn’t received anything from his insurance company, which is why he applied for FEMA assistance
